European DTV Transition Trails U.S.
June 2, 2005
While the end to the U.S. DTV transition seems targeted for the end of 2008, much of Europe has adopted 2010 for the final shut-off of analog TV, and the European Union has now called for early-2012 as a final deadline for all of Europe.
The push toward digital on the other side of the Atlantic is for all the same reasons as here in the U.S.--improved picture and sound quality, and greater spectrum efficiency.
The EU press release quotes Information Society and Media Commissioner Reding as citing "new services that combine mobile telephony and broadcasting, such as mobile 'datacasting' of videos, or multimedia content" as an added benefit made possible by the return of freed-up analog spectrum.
